Buen Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro). Literally “Park of the Pleasant Retreat”. It is a large park of 1.4 km2 (350 acres) at the edge of the city centre. A magnificent park, filled with beautiful sculptures and monuments, galleries, a lake and hosts a variety of events, it is one of Madrid’s premier attractions. It is also a popular cruising spot, close to the statue of the Fallen Angel.
Found in the park are:
Retiro Pond (Estanque del Retiro), a large artificial pond.
Monument to King Alfonso XII.
Monument to General Arsenio.
Rose garden (Rosaleda).
Fountain of the Fallen Angel and the Fallen Angel statue (El Angel Caído). The only tribute to Satan in the world!
Buildings are: Casón del Buen Retiro (Little house of pleasant retreat), Casa de Vacas (House of cows), Salon de Reinos (Room of Kings), Fisherman’s house (Casita del Pescado), Mining building (Velázquez Palace), Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal), with most housing museum collections.
Paseo de la Argentina, also popularly known as Paseo de las Estatuas (“Statue Walk”), is decorated with some of the statues of kings from the Royal Palace, sculpted between 1750 and 1753.
Forest of Remembrance (Bosque del recuerdo), a memorial monument to commemorate the 191 victims of the March 11th. 2004 Madrid train bombings.
